2019 ORCA National Convention
May 29 - June 1
One of the largest gatherings of antique fishing reel collectors and historians in the world is coming to Tulsa in honor of Zebco’s 70th anniversary. The event offers fishing enthusiasts a unique opportunity to view displays of historic reels, lures, and tackle and also purchase antique and collectible fishing items. The Old Reel Collectors Association (ORCA) and the National Fishing Lure Collector’s Club (NFLCC) are cohosting the event.
2019 marks the 70th anniversary of Zebco, one of the most prolific fishing reel manufacturers in history, having produced over 400 million reels. 2019 is also the 65th anniversary of the Zebco Model 33 reel, possibly the most well-known fishing reel in history, with sales of well over 60 million reels. In honor of these anniversaries, ORCA selected Tulsa as their annual convention local, and Zebco enthusiastically agreed to sponsor events for collectors.
Events for the public will all be held at the Holiday Inn Tulsa City Center (17 W 7th Street). An auction of over 600 antique and collectible fishing reels, as well as historical documents about fishing reels, will be held on Thursday, May 30th, beginning at 8:00 am. The auction preview will be open on Wednesday from 2 to 5 pm, and a link to a pdf of the auction catalog is also online at www.orcaonline.org. The antique fishing tackle show, which will include displays, as well as sale tables, is free to the public and open from noon to 4:30 pm on Friday and 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday.
The public can also bring their old fishing heirlooms to the show for free appraisal or to sell. All tackle that the public brings in for sale is auctioned — typically within 30 minutes or less — to the ORCA and NFLCC members at the show, so that the collectors each of have a fair shot at bidding and that the seller gets the best possible price. The seller has the option to turn down the final bid if it doesn’t meet their expectation. Rare reels and lures at these auctions have sold for hundreds — and in some instances, thousands of dollars.
