June 13 - June 17
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday that commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas in June 1865, and more generally the emancipation of African-American slaves throughout the Confederate South. Celebrated in June, Juneteenth is a great cultural celebration that takes place in many cities across the nation, and has been celebrated in Tulsa for over 20 years.
Last year, a team of community-based organizations and community members came together to create the collaborative Tulsa Juneteenth Planning Committee. This year, we are pleased to announce that Tulsa Juneteenth has moved forward to become a nonprofit with a board of leaders from across Tulsa County! Currently, Tulsa Juneteenth is a component fund of Tulsa Community Foundation. All contributions to the Tulsa Juneteenth Fund are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law. (EIN #73-1554474) Taking place in the Heart of the Historic Greenwood District and throughout the IDL, “Tulsa Juneteenth Celebration: Heritage Through Music & Art,” will take place June 13 – 17, 2018. The Board of Directors’ goal is to create a multi-arts experience that recognizes and celebrates the rich heritage of Juneteenth.
In celebration and honor of Juneteenth, Tulsa Juneteenth, Inc, is implementing a weekend of entertainment that includes a celebration of music with nationally-acclaimed artists, Open Mic, Visual Art, educational workshops, performances by local artists and an exclusive VIP Sponsor Party. This celebration is a community driven event that brings together people from all over Tulsa, making this an event for all wanting to celebrate or learn.
